OUR REVIEW ON TOKYO SOBA SINGAPORE
I recently dropped by Tokyo Soba (an offshoot of Tokyo’s famed Yomoda Soba) tucked into Icon Village near Tanjong Pagar MRT, and I was pleasantly surprised by how authentically Japanese it feels in Singapore’s CBD. It’s a compact hole-in-the-wall spot with minimal seating and a wood-finished interior that feels both cozy and lively when full. Despite the limited space, there’s an open kitchen, and ordering via self-service kiosk is efficient—just grab a buzzer and wait at your table, handy for quick lunch runs. Most diners are office workers on weekdays and Japanese expats or families on weekends—a good sign it’s doing something right.
I tried the Ebi‑Ten Soba (S$16.50), which was served with two plump prawns fried in a batter so light it practically melted in my mouth. The cold version came with dipping sauce that was refreshingly balanced, neither too salty nor sweet. I also ordered the Kaisen Kakiage Soba (S$18.50), which featured a crispy vegetable-and-seafood tempura disc—filled with clams, prawns, long beans, and onion—nicely airy and not oily. Their special broth, made daily using imported bonito, mackerel flakes, and kelp, lacked MSG yet delivered rich umami and a gentle citrus finish—particularly wonderful in the hot soba choices like Beef Sukiyaki Hot Soba with tender duck breast or pork cutlet versions. The noodles themselves were freshly made each day from Japanese-imported flour—firm, slightly nutty, and consistently well-textured.
