OUR REVIEW ON KOTUWA SINGAPORE
I recently had dinner at Kotuwa, Chef Rishi Naleendra’s acclaimed Sri Lankan restaurant in New Bahru (Kim Yam Road), and it felt like a refined introduction to a cuisine rarely found in Singapore. The space is warmly inviting—wood-clad interiors with plush seating and moody lighting set against mellow Sri Lankan music created a chic yet relaxed vibe. We began with vibrant starters like Pol Sambol (fresh coconut chilli relish) and Lychee Achcharu (pickled lychee) that woke up the palate with their tangy, spicy brightness. The Egg Hopper, light around the edges and soft in the middle, proved ideal for scooping up the rich Dhal and curries—especially the slow‑braised Lamb Curry, whose deep red heat and fragrant spices made each forkful memorable.
For mains, the Crab Curry (available portion) was a standout—succulent Sri Lankan mud crab in a silky coconut-tamarind gravy layered with notes of turmeric, curry leaves, and true cinnamon bark. Each mouthful was balanced, intense, and deeply satisfying. I also tried the Braised Beef Cheek in Blackened Coconut Gravy, which was fork-tender and aromatic with lemongrass and pandan, served alongside rice and Kaju (cashew nut) Curry that was nutty, creamy, and textured beautifully. While sauces pack heat, none felt overwhelming—enough spice to thrill but still approachable. We finished with the Watalappam Tart, a jaggery-sweet coconut custard layered in pastry and surprisingly well balanced with spice and citrus—it felt indulgent yet harmonious.
Overall, Kotuwa delivers robust Sri Lankan flavors in an accessible yet stylish setting—strong curry techniques, thoughtful condiments, and standout seafood make it worth trying for anyone curious about the cuisine. While some newer reviewers feel the food may be tempered compared to the original Dickson Road location, the quality remains solid, the ambience inviting, and it’s arguably the most consistent Sri Lankan dining experience in Singapore today.
