OUR REVIEW ON BUMBU RESTAURANT SINGAPORE
I recently visited Bumbu Restaurant tucked away on Kandahar Street in Kampong Glam and instantly felt welcomed by its striking Peranakan-themed décor—think vintage teak furnishings, marble tabletops, ornate carved screens, and nostalgic antiques that transport you to mid-century Singapore. Hollywood-style posters and colourful memorabilia add a touch of quirky charm, making the place feel warm, cozy, and thoughtfully curated. Once seated upstairs, I was greeted with complimentary papadoms in two varieties—light and crispy—setting the tone for the rest of my culinary adventure.
I ordered a selection across their Thai, Indonesian, and Peranakan menus. The standout was the Crispy Kangkung Salad, which lived up to its hype—deep-fried water spinach tossed in a tangy, slightly spicy Thai-style sauce with bits of prawns and lemongrass, crackling like chips with every bite. The Beef Rendang was rich and tender, deeply caramelized and fragrant with spices, making it perfect with steamed rice or papadoms. I also tried Tahu Telor, topped with crispy egg threads—the sweetness of the sauce balanced by each crispy bite. Service was friendly and reasonably prompt, though during dinner hours the upstairs could get a bit noisy—but it only added to the bustling atmosphere. Prices remained affordable too, with many dishes under S$20, making Bumbu a smart pick for flavorful, halal Peranakan-inspired dining in a beautifully nostalgic setting.
