OUR REVIEW ON GAMTAN SINGAPORE
I recently had the pleasure of dining at GAMTAN Korean Cuisine on Telok Ayer Street and it left a lasting impression—definitely one of the more exciting Korean BBQ spots I’ve visited in Singapore. The ambiance is casual and modern, with ventilation hoods over each table and fridges stocked with soju, setting the stage for a dedicated BBQ experience. I opted for The King’s Delight set (S$148), which included their signature King Galbi—a rare USDA Prime rib short rib, marinated for six hours and expertly grilled by the staff. Each bite was tender, richly flavored, and succulent—so good it barely needed any seasoning. The set also came with beef tartare, naengmyeon, and soybean stew, creating a satisfying multi-course feast that highlighted well-balanced textures and temperatures.
I also tried their Domi Sotbap (sea bream claypot rice, S$32.80) during lunch, which did a great job of embracing the traditional Korean “stone pot rice” ritual. The fish was flaky and fresh, the rice buttery with subtle smoky notes, and the final touch of pouring barley tea into the pot to savor the scorched rice made for a comforting end to the meal—even if the scorched bits didn’t quite form as expected. To complement the meal, I added a side of truffle gamjajeon—crispy potato pancakes with a hint of truffle—and it was addictive, especially with the silky dip on the side.
Service at GAMTAN was mostly attentive, particularly during the BBQ portion as staff expertly managed the grilling to avoid overcooking and kept meats warm alongside the grill. While the smoke level builds up over the meal (so expect to smell smoky afterward), it didn’t detract from the experience. On the downside, service could feel slightly inconsistent at times, but overall, for anyone craving premium quality Korean barbecue with gourmet touches—especially that elusive King Galbi cut—GAMTAN is absolutely worth a visit.
